Summer concert

The Summer Concert once again featured orchestra members taking a soloist role, with Sheila Rayson and Laura Payne playing a flute duet, and Brian Naisby soloing with the sandpaper blocks.

This concert also featured the whole of Symphony No. 40 by Mozart.

October concert

At the request of the Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Barry Curran, the October concert was entitled ‘The Mayor’s Charity Concert – The Last Night of the Proms’, and helped to promote the  three charities chosen by the Mayor to receive Civic support during his year of office.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Sunderland, together with the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress, and Sunderland’s three Aldermen were present, with a Civic party numbering 40 dignitaries, which included the Lord Lieutenant of the County, The Mayors of Peterlee, Seaham and South Tyneside, the Civic Head of Northumberland County Council, the Vice-Chairman of Durham County Council and a number of councillors, chief officers, former mayors and representatives of the three charities.

Thanks go to our Vice-Presidents, John Lennox and Mark Greenfield, and Patron

Mrs. Alice Arrowsmith, for acting as hosts to the Civic party.

An audience of about 200 was the largest for the last six years.

Thanks go to the St. Andrew’s Operatic Society for their contribution to the evening.

Phil Jackson (Trumpet) married Clare.

We wish them all the best for the future.

Orchestra member Clémance Chenevas-Paule (Violin) has received the degree of

Doctor of Philosophy for work in Pharmaceutical Research, from Sunderland University.

Well done!

Grant applications

Applications to three grant making bodies for funding towards the orchestra’s running costs have all been rejected.

The Sunderland City Council has once again supported the orchestra with a grant of £1000.00 towards the purchase of music.

Many thanks!

Closure of West Park Church

Due to uncertainty regarding the possible sale of West Park Church, the March concert was held in Ewesley Road Methodist Church, on Chester Road.

However, since no-one has yet made a firm offer to purchase the building, The Northern Synod Trust has allowed subsequent concerts to be held in West Park, and we are hopeful that this may continue!
