Summer Streets Festival

Members of the orchestra’s string section will give a half hour performance in

Thompson Park, Southwick, Sunderland on Saturday 15th July at about 2.00pm.

This will be part of the Summer Streets Festival organised by The Cultural Spring.

The event takes place from 12.30 – 7.00pm, is free, and is for all the family.

Addition to the orchestra’s family

Kathryn Maclaren (Viola) gave birth to Joseph Archie (6lb) on 29th January.

  New Patron

Barry Curran, Mayor of Sunderland (May 2015 – May 2016) has now joined the orchestra as a Patron.

We thank him for his enthusiasm as Honorary Patron during his year of office, and welcome him to our membership.

Two representatives from the Arts Council, Dr. Kitty Porteous and Amelia Henderson, were present at the December 2016 and the March 2017 performances.

We thank them for their interest and support.

New Honorary Patron

The Right Worshipful, the Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Doris MacKnight, has graciously agreed to become Honorary Patron of the orchestra for the duration of her year of office from May 2017 – May 2018.

Closure of West Park Church

The anticipated sale of West Park Church did not go to completion, and the building was put back on the market.

A subsequent offer to purchase the building has been accepted by Synod, subject to the usual caveats.

We await developments with interest.

Community Chest funding was recently received from the East Sunderland Area Committee,

Sunderland City Council, (St Michael’s Ward Councillors), to enable the purchase of some

replacement music stands, music storage bags and music stand lights.

The continued support from the Council is greatly appreciated.
