October concert

The programme for this concert was somewhat different to the usual format, in that it featured eight members of the orchestra playing as soloists with orchestral accompaniment.

Judith Thompson and David McCourt gave a violin duet, Vanessa Parson and Paul Judson gave a bassoon duet and solo items were performed by Jane Boyd (cello), Sheila Brownlee (flute),

Fiona Preston (oboe) and Stephanie Brown (French horn).

We were pleased to have all three of our Vice Presidents present in the audience –

Mark Greenfield,  John Lennox (recently returned from Sri Lanka), and Win Lundgren (out and about following a period of ill health).

The concert was recorded on video by our Patron, Peter Andrews, who then converted the material to a DVD. This is greatly appreciated and parts of the recording will be very useful in publicity materials.

Recording of film music

Candice Judge, composer of the film music which was recorded by the orchestra

earlier in the year, visited us in October to have some photographs taken with the musical director and members.

Professional photographer, Paul Steadman and his assistant Zélie Guerin came along to do the honours.

The orchestra now has a YouTube account and some of the solo performances

from the October concert can be viewed via the following link:

Salon Orchestra

A ‘Salon Orchestra’ is being formed by a group of the orchestra members, under the leadership of our assistant conductor, Paul Judson. It is envisaged that the group will be available to play at local events, weddings, garden parties and the like.

Requests for the services of the group should be made in the first instance to Paul Judson at: or telephone 0191-5120189.

The first performance by the group will be as guests at

Castletown Christmas’

on Thursday 12th December at the Castletown Primary School.

This is a concert featuring the Castletown Primary School Choir,

the Castletown Cuckoos (a small group of parents and teachers)

and the Castletown Community Choir,

which is the two together.

Fund-raising through the Co-Operative Society

The Northmoor Co-Operative Store (Off Durham Road, Sunderland), is offering a number of charities a share in a sum of £1000.00. Customers will be asked to vote for the charity of their choice when making purchases.

Sunderland Symphony Orchestra is one of the chosen charities.

The scheme will be launched on Tuesday 26th November, and voting last until

Friday 20th December.

Please tell your family and friends to come to this store and shop so that they are eligible to vote for our orchestra.

The more votes we get, the greater the share of the £1000 we will receive.
