Since the orchestra was formed, it has performed at a wide variety of venues in and around Sunderland. The full orchestra has numbered from 40 to 60 members, depending on the venue and occasion.

The majority of concerts were given in West Park Church.

Orchestra members have performed in groups of varying size, depending on the needs of the occasion, for example  six members formed an ensemble for a coffee morning, and twelve played in the Town Centre to raise funds.

Small groups perform under the title of 'The Sunderland Symphony Orchestra Ensemble' or 'The Palm Court Orchestra of the Sunderland Symphony Orchestra'.

Other concerts involved 20 to 30 players playing in support of local community groups and events.
